Fiber-reinforced Tape: A Quick Primer on Filament Tapes and Similar-Use Products

Mar 17, 2025 | Tapes

What is fiber-reinforced tape?

Filament tape, or fiber-reinforced tape, is a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape reinforced with fiberglass or nylon filaments. It’s known for its strength and durability. The fiberglass filaments give the tape a much higher tensile strength than regular packing tape, making it an excellent choice for heavy-duty applications.

Filament tape has varying gauges based on tensile strength rated from 100 lbs up to 600 lbs per square inch. Daniel Blackburn, a member of Adherex’s sales team, said, “I’d wager if you braided together some of our 300+ pound rated filament tape, you could tow a car with it.” While we do not recommend testing that, it does illustrate that filament tape is a perfect choice for bundling rebar or other industrial applications.

There are two basic types of fiber-reinforced tape:

  • Single-woven (or one-way filament) tape: Has embedded fibers running the length of the tape.
  • Cross-woven (or bi-directional filament) tape: Has embedded fibers intersecting in a crosshatch pattern for added strength.

Features and capabilities

Filament tape is engineered to deliver exceptional strength, making it highly resistant to tearing, splitting, and stretching, ideal for demanding applications. Robust adhesion applies to a range of substrates, including cardboard, plastic, metal, wood, and uneven surfaces. The tape’s clear construction makes branding and graphics visible, and some types of filament tape are specially formulated to leave little to no residue.

The moisture- and solvent-resistant properties of this tape guarantee that your packages and other materials remain secure under various environmental conditions, providing a reliable solution for a variety of use cases.

Applications

Industries that use filament tape for strapping, bundling, and other applications include:

  • Packaging: Reinforcement of heavy cartons and boxes
  • Food and Beverage: Sealing packages and palletizing
  • Electronics: Fiber-reinforced tape with low adhesion for transporting new appliances
  • Automotive: Securing parts or bundling wires or tubing
  • Energy: Pipe bundling and conduit securing
  • Construction: Bundling rebar, PVC, and other piping

Common uses for filament tape include:

  • Packaging: This tape is often used to secure and seal heavy boxes and packages. Its reinforcement makes it ideal for applications where regular tape might break under pressure.
  • Shipping: Often used to bundle items, this tape ensures heavy or bulky shipments stay securely fastened during transport.
  • Strapping: Strapping large or heavy objects adds strength for securing items in place during transit or storage.
  • Reinforcing: Sometimes used to reinforce seams, joints, or edges on large objects that need additional support, such as moving or shipping.
  • Industrial Uses: In industries like construction or manufacturing, it secures materials or temporarily holds items together (as in metal splicing).

Similar products

  • Bundling Film: This alternative to strapping tape offers the advantage of not leaving any residue behind, making it suitable for applications where cleanliness is paramount.
  • MOPP (Tensilized Strapping Tape): Made from polypropylene, MOPP tape boasts a less aggressive adhesive and lacks embedded fibers. Its strength comes from the tape substrate rather than fibers, ensuring clean removal. This strength and low-residue adhesion makes it ideal for inter-warehouse transport.
  • Sanstrap: Sanstrap® quickly and easily bands pallets for intra-plant movement, saving labor and time compared to alternatives.
  • L-clip Filament Tape: This specialized filament tape is designed for use with a machine, facilitating efficient and automated tape application.
